Frequently

Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Red Lake Diatomaceous Earth come from?

Is Red Lake Earth Food Grade?

Red Lake Earth comes from a natural, fresh water deposit found near Kamloops, British Columbia. This unique deposit of Diatomaceous Earth is naturally enhanced with Montmorillonite clay (also known as Calcium Bentonite).

What is the difference between food grade and pool grade diatomaceous earth?

The difference between pool grade and food grade diatomaceous earth is in the way that the natural diatomaceous earth is treated.

Pool grade diatomaceous earth is only meant for use as a filtration aid. It is treated at a very high temperature (calcined) and contains a high percentage of crystalline silica.

Food chemical codex grade diatomaceous earth is treated at a much lower temperature (non-calcined). It contains a very low percentage of crystalline silica (Red Lake Diatomaceous Earth contains less than 1% crystalline silica) and is therefore not harmful to humans or animals.

Red Lake Diatomaceous Earth products meets both FOOD GRADE and FEED GRADE specifications.

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth means that the product meets Food Grade specifications and can be used as a filtering aid or processing aid in food, but cannot be in the end product for human consumption.

Currently RLE Diatomaceous Earth is only registered as a feed additive for the purpose of an anti-caking agent or pelleting aid in feed, not to exceed 2% of the animal’s total diet.

Is Red Lake Earth Diatomaceous Earth safe for all animals?

Red Lake Earth is completely safe to be used with all types of animals. Please note, this does not include reptiles or amphibians.

Can I use Red Lake Earth as a natural insecticide?

Our diatomaceous earth has recently been registered in Canada for use as a natural insecticide.

Diatomaceous Earth is highly effective in killing household and garden pests including:

Ants, Bedbugs, Silverfish, Flour Beetles, Fleas, Cockroaches, Slugs, Earwigs, Centipedes, Millipedes, Sowbugs, Pillbugs, Carpet Beetles, Spiders, Crickets, Colorado Potato Beetles and Caterpillars.
