ABSORBENT PRODUCTS LTD. awarded Business of the Year and Manufacturer of the Year
at the Kamloops Business of Excellence Gala

Peter Aylen of Absorbent Products better be handy with a hammer and saw — after Saturday’s annual Business Excellence Awards, he’s going to need a new trophy case.

 “I just might do that,” he laughed when it was suggested he’ll have to get building.

 Aylen had just collected two of the most prestigious of the 16 awards handed out at the 24th annual soiree, hosted by the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and co-sponsored by TD Canada Trust.

Not only was Absorbent Products, which employs about 50 people, named winner of the Manufacturer Award, but it picked up the trophy for Business of the Year.

“This year’s selection was tough,” said Phil Lindsay of Community Futures Thompson Country, sponsor of the Business of the year category. “It was really tough,” he said before announcing Absorbent Products as the winner.

 

 “This really is a great honour,” said Aylen in accepting the award. “We really appreciate this. This is really quite something.”

 Nominations were received from Kamloops residents for 213 local businesses among a record total of 329.  

 Three finalists in each of 14 categories were selected by a committee of 40 local business organizations and leaders.

 Winners were chosen by chamber members who voted online from the list of finalists.

 Business of the Year Award winner was decided by the chamber’s board of directors from the nominees for the other awards. 

 

 

 

 

 

On October 6th, 2009, Absorbent Products Ltd had been named one of the Top 25 Exporters in British Columbia, and on May 4th, 2009 won the prestigious Mining & Sustainability award.

•  Over 15 years ago Western Industrial Clay Products developed its mine site close to Red Lake near Kamloops where it produces diatomaceous earth and bentonite.  Absorbent Products Ltd. purchased the assets of WICP in 2005. Absorbent  employs 38 people directly and estimates its economic benefit to the community to be in the neighborhood of $20 million.   
•  Absorbent Products Ltd. produces over 140 branded and private label products from the materials it mines including  Agricultural deodorizers, Consumer products such as cat litter, animal feed additives, pellet binders and pond liners, industrial absorbents, sand blasting mediums and ice melt many of which have been approved for use in organic production through listings with the Organic Material Review Institute.  
• Customer base includes Wal-Mart, Tractor Supply, Home Hardware, PetCetra and ships products to Canada, the United States, Asia and Europe
• The company has not had a single lost time accident at the mine sites in the last 15 years.  This impressive safety record speaks for itself.
• Nominated for the Business Excellence Award several times by the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and won the Manufacturer of the Year Award in 2001.
• Absorbent Products Ltd. has instituted an Advisory Committee for Employees that provides a forum for employees to present their views and concerns.  It is chaired by an impartial third person and is an effective means of conflict resolution.
• Absorbent Products Ltd. enjoys an open and cooperative relationship with the Kamloops Indian Band and about 11% of employees are First Nations, many of whom have been with the company for several years and are in supervisory positions.  
• Absorbent Products Ltd. is firmly committed to ongoing reclamation.  They are ahead of their reclamation schedule and areas that have been reclaimed have become more productive ranch land than the neighboring areas that have not been disturbed.  The amount of land currently disturbed that has not yet been reclaimed is less than 40 hectares.
• About 98% of the material transported to the production facility is processed into products and no tailings are produced in the process.
  This is, quite simply, a well-run, sustainable business.  It’s a concrete demonstration that you don’t have to be big to embrace and implement the principles of sustainability into your operations.
